A century of sleep: About the Kingsdown® Mattress Company Forget everything you thought you knew about the Kingsdown® company. In 1904 when the Kingsdown® mattress company began making mattresses by hand in Mebane, North Carolina, we used state-of-the-art materials such as corn husks and horsehair insulation—and sold our premium product for $1.35. A century later, these materials have evolved into hypoallergenic padding and the process involves space-age technology. But even with all of the advances in manufacturing techniques, one thing has not changed about the Kingsdown® company: our mattress sets are still handcrafted, often by the descendants of those early pioneers who were the first Kingsdown employees.
