Those small hands of young children can more easily adapt to four nylon strings and later transfer the chord patterns learned, directly to a guitar. Yup! A “G7? chord on a Uke is the same thing as a “D7? chord on the guitar, etc! You strum the same four strings – an easy concept for young minds to “wrap around.” And remember, there are four common sizes of ukuleles … sizes to fit all sizes! ;o) The same principle applies to those older, weather-worn hands and fingers that don’t seem to be as limber as they once were, four strings and a small instrument is definitely easier to handle. Don’t get me wrong, I love playing the guitar and have for over 50 years (I must have started when I was in diapers!) but when we see those whose mindset is only on the guitar, we need to realize there are means of getting to where we want to go.

I have been playing drums for over 40 years and playing professionally for 30 years or more. By including a smidgen of vocals, percussion, piano and guitar, I've kept busy and out of trouble (mostly) for that time. If someone wants me to play drums I rarely say no, unless I'm already playing somewhere else. This has meant playing in pit orchestra's, rock, country, blues, reggae, jazz, praise, jam, original, cover and stage bands to numerous to mention. I've also sung in college and church choirs and (out of the pit) on stage for community theatre musicals.
