Bed sores (also referred to as pressure sores or decubitus ulcers) can occur when there is constant pressure or friction to a particularly vulnerable tissue area. In the elderly, pressure sores may appear on the tailbone, elbows, heels, or other areas that are under constant pressure. Nursing home staff have a responsibility to provide proper care to elderly patients. This includes trying to avoid pressure sores, promptly identifying when bed sores have surfaced, and properly treating the sores to keep them from worsening, becoming infected, or leading to other serious health problems.
