Leonard E. Johnson, known to most of his friends as “Elmo,” was born December 25, 1919 to Joe and Sarah Johnson as the youngest of eight children. He was raised on a farm in the Estes church community of Chester County, Tennessee. As a child, he attended Hannony School through the eighth grade, but then dropped out to work.
