Shore Drive Road meanders north from Little Traverse Settlement to Seven Mile Point Bluffs, on the shores of Lake Michigan. On a clear day you can see Beaver Island, the 1840's kingdom of self proclaimed Morman King James Jesse Strang. Just north of Surfwood lies the site of the great Ottawa War Councils. Countless trappers, traders and Indians have camped on the sandy beaches, fished in the bountiful lake, and hunted the dense forests. Imagine sailing ships of a bygone era plying their trade from bustling cities of the new frontier to ports at the farthest reaches of the Great Lakes Wilderness. Lumbering camps and boom towns of the 1880's have long since disappeared; the joys and sorrows of their inhabitants forever a secret of the whispering lake winds. Little Traverse Settlement has become Harbor Springs, a picturesque port for sailors and skiers that retains the tranquillity of bygone times. Seven Mile Point Bluffs is now "Surfwood", a small settlement of vacation home sites. "Surfwood" is a bridge to history which provides its settlers the unspoiled beauty and majesty of Lake Michigan.
