Kristin Powers has wanted to be an artist and a farmer for as long as she can remember. She succeeded in the former as a designer and owner of an arts-related business; Land for Good represents her virtual identity as a farmer! With a concentration in ceramics, sculpture and design, she co-founded and ran Trikeenan Tileworks, a handcrafted tile manufacturing company for over 22 years. Kristin is currently a Partner, Cumulus Design Group and Arts Program Director, Monadnock Waldorf School in Keene, New Hampshire.
Jo Barrett has been farming and homesteading in Maine since 1983. Jo taught in public and independent schools for over 25 years. She helped host and instruct farming apprentices over a 20 year period at her family’s farm, King Hill Farm in Penobscot. Recently, she and her husband transferred ownership of the farm to a young farming family.
Jim Habana Hafner grew up in western Massachusetts, where he spent summers working for local farms and farm stands. Jim has over 20 years experience doing program and fund development, outreach and research for organizations in international agriculture, community development, and public health. He has worked with farmers, NGOs and researchers on land tenure, farming systems, agro-forestry and watershed management, primarily in Southeast Asia.
Farmland Advisors Project (2012 – 2014) to provide professional training, materials and support around farmland access, farm succession and working with farmland owners. Webinars, fact sheets and two days of training are being provided to 90 agriculture service providers in New England and New York. Participants represent land trusts, beginning farmer organizations, extension offices, lending institutions and local and state agencies. Funded by Northeast SARE Professional Development Program and a Farm Credit Northeast AgEnhancment grant.
As in other New England states, LFG is also participating in discussions and providing support to farmers and service providers through events hosted by state programs, networks and events. Accessing farmland was a featured topic at the Getting Started in Organic Farming Conference sponsored by NOFA-CT. Kathy and Kip Kolesinskas of American Farmland Trust led a session for an audience of new farmers from teens to folks in their 70?s.
