3M, which makes everything from Scotch tape and Post-It Notes to stethoscopes and library book check-out systems, makes devices that manufacturers can use to protect against ESD. I have written articles for industry trade journals such as Evaluation Engineering and Controlled Environments that described a manufacturer's ESD challenges and how 3M static-control monitors, mats, packaging, flooring, and worker wrist straps saved the day.

You could say self–employment is in my blood. My dad ran a grocery store with my uncle in Ross for more than 50 years. Until recently Dad and my two brothers operated a custom combining and hay baling business that went all over the county during the summer. My husband ran his own business – a law office – for 30 years, until he merged with Bill Hilgers in 2010. Our children work for his firm: Alan as operations manager, and Laura as an attorney.
