Description
Modeled off of the success of its core program, Leadership Rochester’s Emerging Leaders program will build youth leadership through meaningful engagement in real community issues. This program has established a class of 20 high school students (sophomore and junior) from diverse backgrounds and will bring them together for monthly program sessions beginning this weekend with a two day overnight retreat. Students have been selected from urban, suburban, private and public schools. The schools include Bishop Kearney, Freddie Thomas High School, Greece Arcadia, Greece Olympia, The Harley School, Northeast College Preparatory School, Pittsford Sutherland, and Wilson Magnet High School. Over the course of six months, participants will confront issues facing a multicultural society and work individually and as a team to improve Rochester through ideas and actions. Participants will create a culminating project to be presented at the graduation ceremony in May, as well as an individual project that will extend beyond their participation in the Emerging Leaders Program. Workshop sessions will be led by prominent executives, community leaders, government officials and higher education administrators and faculty. Each program session will be uniquely focused on a different topic regarding important issues within our community.
