Description
Lee Morton was born in New Brunswick, New Jersey in 1939 and raised in Branford, Conn. Lee began piano lessons at age 7, after exhibiting great fascination with his grandmother's 1907 Steinway upright. Piano lessons continued through high school with many interruptions for track, basketball and baseball. After high school, Lee studied English and Philosophy at the University of Maine in Orono, Maine and received a B.A. in 1961. After travels in Europe and Hawaii, Lee returned to school and music studies at NYU and the Julliard School of Music in New York. While still attending school, Lee established a piano and harpsichord service and repair business in 1968. In 1970 he relocated to New Hampshire and apprenticed to Philip Belt building fortepianos and harpsichords. In 1974 Lee moved into a 1810 farmhouse and barn in picturesque North Sandwich, NH and established Lee Morton Pianos, a fully equipped piano restoration workshop. Vintage pianos, of which there are over 100 on site, receive new pinblock and strings, soundboard repair and replacement, case refinishing and repair, complete action rebuilding, etc. All the work is custom work, according to what each piano requires to restore it to its original glory. Lee Morton Pianos is known for its meticulous work on vintage Steinway grands and uprights. They are especially proud of their work on some of the other great names from the golden era of pianos, such as Mason and Hamlin and Chickering. It's worth a visit if you're in New England.
