Description

Riverside is the county seat of Riverside County, located beside the Santa Ana River in the Inland Empire region. It is 60 miles east of Los Angeles and has a population of nearly 304,000. Riverside was founded in the 1870’s and is the birthplace of the citrus industry in California. The first navel orange in the state was planted here. By 1882 there were nearly a quarter million citrus trees in Riverside. Innovations such as refrigerated rail cars and new methods of irrigation made Riverside one of the richest cities in the U.S. by 1895.

After serving as a Spanish mission outpost, the first Anglo inhabitants were a group of Mormon pioneers who farmed there from 1851-1857. The land was then purchased by Benjamin Barton who planted vineyards and built a winery. The arrival of the railroad in the 1880’s started a land boom. The area became a center for citrus production with its hot, dry climate and ready access to water. For 75 years, the region was the largest producer of navel oranges in the world. When it was incorporated in 1888, it was named Redlands after the color of the soil.

The Levinson Foundation has made a $5,000 contribution to the Association of Israeli-Palestinian Physicians for Human Rights. The Association is dedicated to fighting for human rights, particularly the right to safe and ethical healthcare. The Association’s activities integrate advocacy and action to change harmful policies and to provide fair healthcare to all residents of Israel and the Occupied Territories. The Levinson Foundation’s contribution will help the Association’s goal of improving Israel’s healthcare system.

The Levinson Foundation has aided in the start-up of the Western Environmental Law Center by donating $8,000 to the non-profit public interest law firm. Western Environmental Law Center provides free or reduced-fee legal services to grassroots and environmental organizations and challenges corporations and government agencies that violate environmental laws. Since its inception in 1993, Western Environmental Law Center has worked with more than 250 organizations helping preserve air and water quality, empower local communities and protect natural resources.

The Levinson Foundation made a grant of $8,000 to the Environmental Law Alliance Worldwide (eLAW). eLAW was founded in 1989 when public interest lawyers from 10 countries came together to share strategies and legal and scientific information to promote environmental protection more effectively in their communities. Today, over 300 public interest advocates from 70 countries are part of the eLAW network. The Levinson Foundation’s grant will allow electronic access to legal and scientific information to advocates in Africa and Central America.
