According to an article in the November 2009 issue of Fire Safety Engineering “44% of fire related deaths happen to people who were outside the room of origin of the blaze;” The article went on to cite the 1996 fire at the Düsseldorf Airport where eight people were killed in the VIP lounge after a fire ignited 700 metres from lounge spread through the ventilation ducts catching the eight individuals that perished by surprised. The enactment of The Regulatory Reform (fire safety) Order (RRO) came into effect in October 2006, having a huge impact on fire safety throughout Great Britain. Experience has shown that damper testing is often overlooked, either due to lack of resources, or simply due to the fact that dampers are “Out of sight, out of mind”, in the ductwork, above the ceiling – not visible on a daily basis. But as the tragedy at Düsseldorf Airport illustrated, dampers are vital to your facility’s fire safety system. Fire and Smoke Dampers are a critical component of the air conditioning and ventilation system in fire safety design. British Standards 5888 – “Fire Precautions in the design, construction and use of buildings. Managing fire safety”; states that fire dampers are located where ductwork passes through fire compartment walls and floors. Typically the fire damper is held open by a fusible link.
