Shopping One of the largest, most modern Wal-Mart facilities was recently built in Savannah. Caves Carved out by the Tennessee River, caves are located in the Northern part of the county. The Indians used these caves as dwellings. The Confederate soldiers used them during the civil war to manufacture gun powder. Sulfur was found throughout the caves and was the main ingredient in explosives during the war between the states. Country star Daryl Worley, native son of Hardin County, hosts his annual Tennessee river run in Pickwick in the month of September. This 3 day event consists of a golf tournament, fishing tournament, 5 K run, motorcycle poker run, and his famous country music concert. The concert features different music stars and legends each year. All proceeds benefit the Daryl Worley Foundation Incorporated serving the needs of Hardin and McNairy counties, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, LeBonheur Children's Medical Center and Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Shiloh National Military Park Southwest of Savannah was the scene of the first large scale battle of the Civil War. On April 6-7 1862, 110,000 Union and Confederate troops fought near the Tennessee River. The Union victory was costly for both sides; one out of every five men were killed or wounded.
