Description

Walmart Associate Choice Program Literacy New York (LNY) is pleased to have been selected as one of the five New York State nonprofit organizations participating in the Walmart Associate Choice Program. We invite Walmart and Sam’s Club associates to explore the information about Literacy New York and our network of local, community-based adult literacy affiliates. For over 35 years, the LNY state administrative office has provided training and technical assistance to develop and build the organizational and programmatic capacity of volunteer-based literacy providers across New York State. Annually, our network of 36 affiliates – from Long Island to Buffalo and the Southern Tier to the North Country – serves more than 6,200 adult learners and utilizes the services of over 6,500 volunteers who provide tutoring and administrative support. Each year, LNY impacts and changes the lives of thousands of learners. We help learners gain the literacy and math skills they need to get a job, keep a job, get a better job, help their children in school, read drug prescription directions, vote, participate in their community and reach their personal goals and dreams. The need for literacy services in New York is monumental. In the NY counties we serve, more than 1.3 million adults have low literacy and language skills. Fewer than 10% are being served. In recent years, there has been a dramatic increase in the number of English language learners (immigrants, refugees, second language learners) seeking our services. In order to serve these learners well, LNY must update its English language learning/ELL tutor training to incorporate current research-based content necessary for today’s increasingly diverse English language learner population. LNY would use the Walmart Foundation Associate Choice Program grant to design, develop, pilot, implement and evaluate a new English Language Learning (ELL) training and curriculum. Thousands of ELL adult learners and their families across New York State would benefit from this new training/ curriculum. Additionally, thousands of volunteer tutors, in nearly every county in New York, would receive new, high quality, state of the art training that will enable them to “make a difference” in the lives of underserved adults in their communities.
