Description

"LATAN assists individuals with disabilities to achieve a higher quality of life and greater independence through increased access to assistive technology (AT) as part of their daily lives." Such technology includes aids that individuals use to assist them in daily activities, such as canes, wheelchairs, communication devices, hearing aids, keyboard alternatives, and vision aids. "Without my wheelchair and positioning system, I would be sentenced to life in a bed," says a consumer from Baton Rouge. "The assistive technology I use gives me some measure of physical independence, and best of all, it makes it possible for me to go to work everyday." In Louisiana alone, approximately 26%, over 1.13 million, of Louisiana's 4.3 million residents are individuals with disabilities or functional limitations, including some 493,660 persons over the age of 64. Most if not all of these individuals experience some degree of functional limitations and could benefit from some type of assistive technology in the course of their daily lives.
