This is where we raise the bar far above the competition. While the “average” defensive driving instructor typically must simply pass a written and standard driving exam, all FACTS Driving Instructors are current Law Enforcement Officers, each possessing a minimum of 10+ years of real world collision avoidance experience. In other words, these are guys that practice defensive driving and collision avoidance tactics on a DAILY basis in real world situations. Steve Klapka began his law enforcement career in 1980 with the Dunedin Police Department before advancing to the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office in 1982. In 1987 Steve was hired by the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office working in the patrol division in 1988 was transferred to the Personnel and Training Division, where he obtained his Instructor Certificate. In 1993 Steve was transferred to the Traffic Division where he obtained his certification in Traffic Homicide, Advanced Traffic Homicide and Traffic Reconstruction Classes. He also became a radar /laser Instructor. In 2005 Steve sat on a committee for the Florida Department of Law Enforcement to rewrite the Laser and Radar Program for the State of Florida, also serving on the Florida Sheriff’s Association committee aimed at helping reduce teen driving deaths. In January 2007, the Florida Sheriff’s Association launched the “Teen Driver Challenge”, a defensive driving and collision avoidance course geared at reducing teen driving incidents. In 2008 and as a byproduct of the “Teen Driver Challenge”, Steve and his partner Rob Pacchiarotti assisted in developing a fleet defensive driving program for the Citrus County Commissioners Risk Management Board. During the initial 10-month launch of this two-year pilot program, this collision avoidance course was responsible for helping to reduce County employee fleet crashes by a whopping 70%, saving Citrus County over $200,000.
