Universal Housing Design allows you to maintain your independent living style, in your own home. As he explains: "It's not just an aging-in-place issue, it's more of a disabilities issue, part of the Americans with Disabilities Act which became law in the early 1990s. "We call the entire concept Universal Design, because its intent is to simplify life for everyone, by making products and environments more usable by as many people as possible. "So if you are wheel-chair bound or challenged by injury, trauma or circumstance, or if you want friends, family or loved ones who are similarly challenged to be comfortable and welcome in your home, Universal Design can make what was once inaccessible, now easy to manage and manipulate! "Here at Lynch Construction we are steeped in Universal Design principles, which include concepts such as no-threshold entrances, lever handles instead of doorknobs, and extra-wide doorways to admit wheelchairs. "These and other features are lacking in older homes, and that leads people with decreased mobility due to age or injury to become frustrated and think they have to move. "Many people I've met they really wish they could stay right where their life is and their roots are," says Donald Lynch. "As a Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist and a believer in Universal Design, I can help homeowners avoid the upheaval of moving by making specific modifications — sometimes even a small change can make a world of difference!" Among other minor adjustments Lynch recommends are using pad type light switches or motion sensor lights as opposed to the traditional toggle switch, which can be difficult to operate or reach, or even can be hard to find for those with low vision. Certain types of hinges give as much as two more inches of opening in a doorway, without needing a new frame. And creating a first floor master suite can remove the problem of stairs.
