Mental Health America of Los Angeles (MHA) is dedicated to promoting mental health recovery and wellness. Our purpose is to help everyone reach healthy lives – whether the need is recovery from mental illness or is occasional and caused by everyday life. Our message is simple – good mental health is fundamental to the health and well-being of everyone in Los Angeles County. Founded in 1924, we are one of the county’s oldest nonprofit mental health organizations. MHA is an affiliate of the national Mental Health America and Mental Health America of California .
Client choice With our “menu approach,” we provide services based on individuals’ own goals. They choose what services they want and the staff members with whom they would like to work. We de-emphasize traditional “professional” to “patient” relationships and respect individuals as equal partners in their recovery.
Housing We provide vouchers to local motels to give homeless people a safe place to stay while we help secure essential needs. Our programs provide services for “Shelter Plus Care” projects, which provide low-income rental certificates to homeless people with mental illness. We help them apply for certificates, find apartments, move in and learn the daily life skills they need to succeed in their new homes.
A grant from the Long Beach Community Action Partnership supports these efforts. We provide services through contracts with the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health, with Mental Health Services Act funds; California Department of Rehabilitation; City of Long Beach; U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development; Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority; Los Angeles County Community Development Commission; and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs’ Supportive Services for Veterans Families program. We conduct education research for the California Department of Education.
We provide opportunities for individuals to enhance their well-being as they journey toward physical, spiritual and emotional well-being.
