This innovative approach to manual physical therapy was developed by physiotherapist G. D. Maitland of Australia in the early 1970's. This approach provides a framework for the evaluation and treatment of Neuro- Musculo- Skeletal disorders. There are several key procedures and concepts that make the Australian Method a unique approach to manual physical therapy. A key concept is the evaluation strategy, known as S.I.N.S., an acronym for "Severity, Irritability, Nature, and Stage." S.I.N.S. is used with great success to determine the vigor and extent of the physical exam and treatment.
