Long before I was with Maverick, I had accepted a consulting assignment with a very small, but fast growing company that was in the security services business-installing, servicing and monitoring residential and business security systems. It was started by two brothers, neither one with very much experience in the industry, but they had access to sufficient capital to start the business and provide enough funding for a 24 hour central monitoring station. One brother had sales and admin under him, the other took on service, installation and the monitoring center. The latter had acquired minimal experience in service and installation by working less than a year for a national company in the industry. I was impressed with their simple but effective marketing efforts (this was before the internet) and the “sales side brother’s” ability to sell at good margins. All things considered, they were running a very nice, small business. As I had, on an order of magnitude, more experience in the field than they did, they engaged me to help in numerous areas.
I asked very specific questions about their father’s sales tactics, and told them that if their dad was actually telling the customers that their company’s system was U.L. approved under the listing necessary for the retailer that it would come back to haunt them, and constituted at the least, fraud and gross negligence. Of course, on top of all that I told them it was highly unethical of their father to mislead the customers into believing they were buying “A” and getting “B.” They partially defended their father’s actions by telling me they were using necessary U.L. listed equipment, and installing to the necessary standard, but it was only the method of how the system electronically spoke to the monitoring center that was not in accordance with U.L. requirements for the type of establishments in question. I added, “That, and they couldn’t issue the certificate of U.L. approval that needed to go to the store owners’ insurance company.” I reacted harshly, and said “A specious defense. I don’t care what your father knows and doesn’t know, and frankly, I don’t care about his feelings-that’s your problem.
