Buildings today incorporate lighter weight structural materials than those built years ago. Contemporary roofing systems should therefore have the ability to withstand the increased substrate movements and deflections. Durability of the roof can be assured through good planning and by the correct specification and installation of the waterproofing system. Nearly 30 years of research and experience The year was 1964. The roofing industry had been stagnant for several decades. The challenge was to improve the performance characteristics of roofing asphalt. While searching for chemicals to improve properties of asphalt, I met Doctor Gorgati, an Italian chemist who recently invented a new roofing material, the APP modified bitumen roofing membrance. I immediately began manufacturing and marketing the product throughout Asia. Our facility was, in fact, only the second modified bitumen manufacturing facility in the worldThe invention of APP modified membrances was certainly a giant step forward and a great improvement over conventional BUR systems. However, the product had a few drawbacks. First and foremost was the product's incompatibility with mopping asphalt, and second was APP's non elastomeric physical properties that made the product inflexible at low temperatures. So the next stage of bitumen modification was the introduction and incorporation of SBS into asphalt. SBS membranes remain elastic at low temperatures and are compatible with mopping asphalt. The resulting product is far superior than its predecessors, BUR and APP modified asphalt.
