Dr. Jonnie H. McLeod was a practicing pediatrician in Charlotte in the late 1960's, and was disturbed by the lack of drug treatment services for the chemically addicted individuals she continued to see in her practice. Along with a group of people who had made conscious decisions to keep drugs out of their own lives, Dr. McLeod began soliciting community support for treatment services. Using a basement laundry room at the Central YMCA equipped with furniture from various attics and a 24-hour telephone, a walk-in crisis center opened in 1969. The "Open House" was staffed primarily by volunteers and a few regular employees.In 1972 John Alien became the first Executive Director of Open House and remained until 1980. Under his direction the organization developed financial security and continuity of services. Mr. Alien secured federal funding for Open House which was matched with state and county monies. With this secure funding, Open House began its tradition of responding to community addiction treatment needs.In 1981 S. Eugene (Gene) Hall became the Executive Director of Open House. Under his leadership all services were moved to McLeod Center's present location on Remount Road in 1983. In 1988 Continuation Place, a twenty bed adolescent dormitory, was built on the Open House campus, and in 1991 the McLeod Residential Center, a two-story adult dormitory, opened. The new McLeod Residential Center building brought the total number of structures on the Open House campus to four and separated the residential quarters from the offices and group rooms. That separation allowed the scope of services to provide comprehensive treatment for adolescents and adults more effectively. In 1995, the Board of Trustees named Gene the President of McLeod Center which made him a voting member of the Board.
