Roberta Stephens is the founder and CEO of Medical Billing Technologies Incorporated in Visalia. In 1994, while developing a grant proposal for a Tulare County school, Roberta identified a business opportunity that inspired her to form the company. Since then, Roberta has built a business that helps more than 125 California school districts and similar entities utilize federal funding to provide health insurance and health services to California children. From its humble one-woman beginning in a spare room, the company has grown to 48 employees based both in Visalia and elsewhere in the state. As a testament to its success, the company created 11 new jobs in 2008 even as the economy was contracting. The company also recently built a new headquarters in Visalia. More than one million children in California lack health insurance, and the company’s chief goal is to link eligible children with available health care services. In addition to promoting general wellness and development, these services improve the ability of children to attend school and their capacity to learn. Medical Billing Technologies Incorporated serves school districts, county offices of education, community colleges, public health departments and community-based organizations, helping them to participate in four federally funded reimbursement programs administered by the California Department of Health Care Services. With MBT's guidance, these entities receive more than $40 million in reimbursements annually. Diligently following governmental regulations is at times burdensome, but the company’s strict adherence assures its clients have legitimate and audit-ready reimbursements. The company’s efforts to promote accuracy and efficiency save time, money and resources at every level. Since 2003, Roberta’s company has been an active supporter of the Visalia Battered Women’s Shelter, providing lunch and fellowship quarterly to the women and families living there. MBT also contributes funds to benefit professional organizations including the Health Services Association of California Community Colleges, the California Association of School Business Officials, the Association of California School Administrators, the California School Nurses Organization, and many others.
