Founded in 1997, the Metanexus Institute is dedicated to promoting scientifically rigorous and philosophically open-ended explorations of foundational questions. To fulfill its mandate, the organization supports the exchange of innovative ideas through conferences, salons, books, and its website. Our online magazine is committed to publishing scholars whose ability to synthesize knowledge in constructive and nuanced ways challenges our thinking and propels us forward into a healthy, just, and sustainable future.

The only two options that seem to have any likelihood of being implemented are the steady-as-she-goes and transhumanism. Recall, the steady-as-she-goes option says that it is permissible to develop 21st century world-engineering technologies, but not to use them for person-engineering purposes. The name stems from the fact that, as noted, there are enormous resources devoted at present to the development of genetic and nanotechnologies for world-engineering purposes, and so the proposal is to continue with our current norms. There are at least two problems with the steady-as-she goes policy.
