Description
Microcut Company was established in 1979 and has become an important supplier of high performance, wire EDM machined hardware for the electronics and aerospace industries. Through the use of processes developed over many years, Microcut Company is now able to manufacture state of the art machined parts using a variety of exotic materials that can not be made using conventional techniques such as CNC milling or chemical etching. The wire EDM (electrical discharge machining) process is carried out by applying a voltage between a tightly stretched wire and the material being machined. In the presence of an electrolyte, the wire is slowly moved through the material by a computer controlled apparatus. The wire effectively "cuts" the material by electrolytic erosion. The advantages of this process compared to conventional machining processes are many. It is possible, for example, to machine a material such as copper/tungsten, a high thermal conductivity material often used for microwave carriers, without using any tool lubricating oils. Since this material has a high porosity compared to single element material, the use of lubricating oils can often complicate the subsequent plating operation. But with wire EDM, the problem is obviated. Another unique capability of wire EDM is the ability to cut very narrow slots in relatively thick materials while maintaining edge perpendicularity. For example, a .O25" thru .250" thick sheet of copper could have a meandering slot less than .OO5" wide and many inches long. Such processes are critical for some suspended substrate microwave circuit applications.
