Founded in 1993, Microecologies®, Inc. has built a solid reputation among residential clients, property managers, architects, physicians, and attorneys by providing excellence in identifying and solving indoor environmental problems. During these past 20+ years, we have conducted over 5,000 indoor environmental investigations, including over 3,000 mold inspections and water damage inspections.

Mr. Sothern has a Master of Science degree from Hunter College in Environmental and Occupational Health. He has been in industrial hygiene practice for over 20 years, with a concentration on indoor environmental issues. In 1993, he founded Microecologies®, Inc. to provide environmental evaluations and clean-up solutions for occupants of residential and commercial buildings. During these past 20 years, he has personally conducted or supervised over 5,000 indoor environmental inspections and 3,000 environmental remediation projects.

Microecologies® recognizes that a successful LEED project depends on the collaboration between all members of the project team, and we are dedicated to working with your team to provide comprehensive services throughout the entire project to achieve the level of LEED certification that you are pursuing.

Paul Scardino is a senior investigator for Microecologies® with over twenty years of combined experience in criminal forensic and environmental investigation. He has a Masters degree in chemistry from New York University, is an EPA certified lead inspector and risk assessor, is a NYS certified asbestos inspector, and is a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Accredited Professional. Mr. Scardino has conducted indoor environmental investigations and managed remediation projects for hundreds of our clients in cases involving water damage.

Most people when asked acknowledge that they recognize the smell of an odor that they would characterize as musty or moldy. Such odors provide a very good warning indicator of there being mold growth conditions in the indoor environment. Mold odors are caused by the volatilization of very caustic enzymes that are secreted through the mycelia (similar to a root system) of mold, which is the process by which molds dissolve organic materials such that the nutrients can be absorbed to provide sustenance and growth.
