Midwest Plastic Engineering, Incorporated was originally started in 1972 in a small facility in Burr Oak, Michigan. The original name was Baker Mold & Tool, founded by Dennis and Judy Baker. The company produced injection molds, jigs and fixtures, and specialized machinery for various customers. Over the course of the next two years, the company added two 1,600 square foot additions. The first was to accommodate more machinery for tool and die fabrication, as well as a small office. The second addition was added in 1974 so that two used injection presses could be purchased, which marked the formation Midwest Plastic Engineering, Incorporated in 1975. In 1978, a new 4,200 square foot building was constructed, to house the injection molding operations. As the customer base for Midwest Plastic grew, more injection molding machines were added to the building and in 1980, a 5,200 square foot warehouse was added to the back of the molding facility. By this time, Midwest Plastic had six injection molding machines running at full capacity. Also in 1980, Midwest Plastic Engineering, Incorporated purchased a building on adjacent property that could be used for assembly operations. During the next five years, Midwest Plastic increased the number of injection molding machines from six to fourteen, running twenty-four hours a day and a minimum of five days a week. As the customer base grew so did the need for even more machines, however the utility services in Burr Oak were insufficient to handle Midwest Plastic's requirements. In 1985, Midwest Plastic Engineering, Incorporated started construction on its new 40,000 square foot facility located in Sturgis, Michigan. This new facility incorporated all of the previous buildings under one roof. Shortly after moving into the new facility, four more injection molding machines were added, bringing the total to 18 machines. Because space was once again filling up faster than expected, a 40,000 square foot addition was built in 1989. This addition has allowed Midwest Plastic to grow in size to its current thirty-two injection molding machines, as well as having sufficient warehouse space for raw materials and finished product for a molding facility of this size. In 1991, a Class A paint room was constructed inside the building to accommodate our customers' needs for painted plastic products.
