Monkey Business Camp

Description

The Youth Leadership Program is for 10-15 year olds who have experience in a camp setting, enjoy the outdoors, and love working with younger kids. Youth leaders have opportunities to teach a special skill they may have, to join in some exciting activities during a day at camp, and to receive training. Youth Leaders pay a reduced fee, they are not paid. Some youth leaders grow into paid counselor positions. Positions available at both summer and school break camps.

I'm grateful to be a part of the Monkey Business Camp staff for my seventh summer. I’ve worked as a park ranger, farmer, teacher, counselor and mentor for over 20 years, recently as Youth Leadership Director for The Mosaic Project. Currently I facilitate a kids mindfulness play group on the peninsula and lead a teen sangha in Oakland. I'm excited about another joyful, peaceful and inspiring summer spent with the Monkey Business community in Tilden Park.

We are proud to count ourselves among the growing ranks of organizations dedicated to creating a culture of sustainability. The most important way we do this is by hosting camp outdoors. Studies have shown that when children have memorable, fun experiences in nature, those memories not only sustain them, but also inspire them to fight for the natural world. We are creating a camp culture where it is “cool” to be green! We do art projects using recycled materials, build our drama sets out of almost 100% used wood and cardboard, show examples of alternative energy such bicycle-powered smoothie blenders, and bring in naturalists to share their knowledge of the plant and animal life in Tilden Park. In 2009, we became a certified Green business!.

Hey there! My name is Gil and this is my first year working with MBC. I just finished my first year at Mills College where I study Sociology and Urban Education. I love working with kids and am working my way towards someday teaching. I am very excited to be a part of your GOTG adventures!.
