Montgomery County Intermediate Unit

Description

Intermediate Units in Pennsylvania are part of the governance structure of public education in the Commonwealth. They are located in the middle between the state education agency and the local school districts. They were designed primarily to provide services to local school districts that can be operated more effectively and efficiently on a regional basis. Intermediate Units also have been given the responsibility of providing programs/services to students attending the non public schools in their regional area. The majority of the programs offered by intermediate units are supported by federal, state or district contributions. Intermediate units are dependent upon these sources of funding since they do not have taxing power.The Montgomery County Intermediate Unit is governed by a board of twenty two members who serve three-year terms. Board members are elected from among the public school directors of school districts within Montgomery County. The executive director is the chief school officer of the intermediate unit.We are pleased to serve the schools of Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, with programs, all designed to meet the needs of students from three to 21 years of age. Montgomery County's 22 local school districts enroll over 100,000 students. Our non-public schools provide education for 34,000.
