Melvin served with the US Army as an MP during World War II in Trinidad and Spain. He was also a member of Athens Masonic Van Meter Lodge #762 for over 65 years, a Republican Precinct Committeeman for several decades, on the Sangamon County Farm Bureau Board, and President of Brittin Cemetery.
Karla E. (Engel) Henning was born March 19, 1950 in Springfield, the daughter of Carl and Daisy (Dufer) Engel. Karla grew up with one sister and two brothers on a farm near Cantrall, Illinois. Ms. Henning graduated from Athens High School in 1968 and continued her education at Carle Hospital in Urbana, Illinois, earning her Surgical Technician Degree. Karla married Richard E. Henning on January 24, 1970 in Athens, Illinois. Dick and Karla have three children, Kimberly Kiefer, Kara Nordstrom and Rich Henning.
Even with the lose of husband Dick, Karla strives to provide service to the community and the families that Mott & Henning assists. She offers the same dedication and respect to funeral home customers as she does her own family.
