Since just after the Civil War, Mount St. Mary's University has sponsored a variety of intercollegiate sporting activities for the benefit of the students and the institution.In the early 1870s, Mount St. Mary's students put together a baseball team to represent the nation's second oldest Catholic college against its oldest, Jesuit-run Georgetown. Baseball was the Mount's only sport for the first 20 years or so, fielding teams and playing a series of games almost every year.In 1891, football came to the Mount, followed in 1909 by basketball. Those three sports enjoyed solid support from the students, as Mount baseball and basketball in particular were among the East's strongest squads.
