SEARHC was established in 1975 under the provisions of the Indian Self-Determination Act. The intent of this legislation was to have Indian Health Service programs and facilities turned over to tribal management. Our contracting with IHS began in 1976 when we took over management of the Community Health Aides Program. In 1982, we took over operation of the IHS Juneau clinic and in 1986 we took over operation of Mt. Edgecumbe Hospital.

SEARHC employees developed the award-winning Community Wellness Advocate program, in partnership with the University of Alaska Southeast-Sitka Campus, to train local residents to provide health education and health promotion services in their villages.

Some SEARHC facilities are classified as Community Health Centers and receive funding from the U.S. Health Resource and Services Administration (HRSA) for providing health services in underserved areas. As Community Health Centers, these clinics can treat non-Native patients using a sliding fee schedule based on income. SEARHC’s facilities are FTCA deemed by the Federal Government.
