BY JYOTHSNA HEGDE Film: "Dabangg"; Starring: Salman Khan, Introducing Sonakshi Sinha, Sonu Sood, Arbaaz Khan, Mahesh Manjrekar, Dimple Kapadia, Vinod Khanna; Directed by: Abhinav Kashyap Debutant director and co writer Abhinav Kashyap reminds us that Salman Khan is in fact Dabangg (fearless), with a bang! Story be damned, Dabangg solely relies on Salman's star power and he delivers in style twirling Ray Ban sunglasses between his fingers and slipping it in the collar at his nape with the flick of the arm. Salman devours the role of Chubul Pandey with such pizzaz, it is hard not to be engrossed in this over exaggerated, comical and larger than life cinema despite it's over the top approach. Chubul Robinhood Pandey, an honorable corrupt cop in UP, struggles with relationships - his step father Prajapati Pandey (Vinod Khanna) and dim-witted half brother Makhanchan Pandey (Arbaaz Khan). His mother's (Dimple Kapadia) efforts of keeping the peace in the family often end in vain. Chulbul's enemy Cheddi Singh (Sonu Sood) is only too happy to use the weak link in the Pandey family, Makhanchan against his brother. While on duty one fine day, Chulbul finds village belle Rajjo (Sonakshi Sinha) whom he bullies charmingly into marrying him. Dialogues, co-written by Dilip Shukla, are in your face and simply unapologetic. Action sequences choreographed by S Vijayan, an amalgamation of fun,frolic and utter mayhem are a treat to watch. So when Chulbul is in the midst of a fight and the phone rings, he pauses to enjoy it's ring tone, a popular item number. When the tune stops, returns to breaking the baddie's back without a flinch. Music by Sajid-wajid mellows the punch when required also to adds zing to the atmosphere. Additional track "Munni badnaam hui" by Lalit Pundit is a chartbuster. Cinematography by Mahesh Limaye's is apt. Pranav V. Dhiwar's editing is smart and slick. Dabangg takes you back to the 80's where the mother-son relations, sibling rivalries, step parental behavior occupied center stage. The charm of Dabangg however lies in the vibrant treatment of an age old formula, carefully avoiding melodrama, yet dealing with the emotions with an underlying lightness. For all it's charisma, Dabangg offers no solid narrative. While Chulbul Pandey maybe the most adorable screen character on Hindi cinema in recent times, he has not been given a substantial story to tell. Salman was made to play Chulbul. He is as delightful as can be and it is his show all the way. You can tell Salman is enjoying himself as he struts his stuff gyrating his way to the upbeat tunes, throwing abuses, enticing the shy village beauty and kicking butt start to finish. He does not even need to rip open his shirt himself, happens all on it's own in the final fight sequence - an icing on the cake indeed. Shatrughan's daughter Sonakshi Sinha exudes spunk holding her own. Arbaaz Khan who is also the producer holds back his character, maybe too much. Sonu Sood, Vinod Khanna, Dimple Kapadia, Anupam Kher do well in the little screen time allotted. Yes, Dabangg is all style and low on substance. But the carefree cop Chulbul manages to keep you occupied anyway.
