Elburn was originally going to be called Melbourne when it was founded in the 19th century. The letter m was the first to go, then the u was removed and the e was the last letter to go. The town was first settled by William Lance, who built a stagecoach and inn. Eventually, a railroad station would be built. In 2007, the town of Elburn got its first major grocery store.
