WASHINGTON (NNS) -- The Navy-Marine Corps team is united in fulfilling the mandate to be where it matters, when it matters, Navy Adm. Jonathan W. Greenert, the chief of naval operations, said March 25. Marine Corps Commandant Gen. James F. Amos is "a great shipmate," the admiral added during a hearing of the House Appropriations Committee's defense subcommittee. Interaction between the two services has never been better, Greenert said, noting that he is committed to continuing that momentum. "Forward presence is our mandate," the admiral said. By operating from forward locations, the Navy and Marine Corps provide President Barack Obama with options to deal promptly with global contingencies, he explained. "As we conclude over a decade of wars and bring our ground forces home from extended stability operations, your naval forces will remain on watch," Greenert said.

The Navy Dispatch was founded in the early 1960s by William J. Hagerty after his retirement from a career in the U.S. Navy. Hagerty, a WWII Purple Heart Veteran, went into a public information billet after the war. Later, Hagerty served as Public Affairs Officer at Naval Station Long Beach, PAO at Commander 11th Naval District (now Commander Naval Region Southwest) and at Naval Training Center, San Diego. His newspaper experience during his Navy career set the stage for his second career -- the Navy Dispatch newspaper group published by Western States Weeklies, Inc.

On Aug. 29, 2013, NAVADMIN 218/13 was released to provide Navy guidance on the Department of Defense memo dated Aug. 13, 2013 announcing the plan to extend benefits to same-sex spouses of uniformed service members and Department of Defense civilian employees. The Supreme Court ruling means that the Defense Department will extend benefits, including medical, dental, and with-dependent Basic Allowance for Housing to same-sex spouses of military personnel. What is the new policy granting administrative absence for service members to get married? This policy is being revised by the Office of the Secretary of Defense and Navy is awaiting promulgation. Upon receipt of this new guidance, MILPERSMAN 1050-440 will outline additional policy details for the administrative absence. When will same-sex spouses be able to receive benefits? Will they be retroactive to the date of the Supreme Court decision? The Department will recognize all marriages that are certified with a valid marriage license/certificate.
