We have the right to own as many pets as we may responsibly maintain. But too many owners have been forced to give up their dogs due to arbitrary pet limit laws . Such laws may also reduce the number of homes available to pets, result in increased shelter intakes, and can hamper the efforts of legitimate rescue groups. But responsible dog breeding continues to be severely restricted while laws are increasingly being proposed and enacted that allow only “rescue” dogs to be offered. ( IA SF2361 , IL HB4056 , Miami-Dade, FL , Milwaukee 140011 , Philadelphia 140381 ) We, as loving owners, have the right to make decisions regarding the veterinary care our pets receive. But laws are being passed that require owners to surgically alter their dogs, while other laws would limit or ban accepted veterinary and animal husbandry procedures. Overreaching laws and “one size fits all” regulations seek to dictate animal care decisions that should be made by a dog owner in consultation with a veterinarian.
