O wned and operated by Jane Saunders and her daughters, Ann and Kathy, TerraNova is the branded retail line of the parent company A.K.A. Saunders, Inc., a natural bath and body care company that also produces private label products under the tradename Nectarine.I n 1970, inspired by Berkeley's "counterculture," Jane began creating alternative bath and body care products to reflect the emerging interest in natural ingredients and environmental concerns. The idea was simple: Jane wanted to make products that embodied her political and social values - using only pure, natural, and biodegradable ingredients. Instead of wasteful packaging, she offered customers bottles which they could return for refilling or recycling.T ogether with her sister-in-law and their pooled savings of $750, Jane went into business. The Body Shop (named in homage to the building's original use), made 16 tons of soap that first year, custom cut into bars, with fragrances like Strawberry Yogurt, Cucumber and Chocolate. The store offered body lotions, creams, shampoos and conditioners, custom-scented with essential oils. The Body Shop was an immediate hit with Berkeley residents and within two years, had grown to six retail stores in the Bay Area (now owned by Jane's niece), and a national wholesale business.
