Background In 1972, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and coastal states created a network of protected areas through the Coastal Zone Management Act. The network—called the National Estuarine Research Reserve System (NERRS)—promotes scientific research on estuaries to improve our ability to understand, manage, and restore these vital habitats. There are 27 reserves throughout the country. The National Estuarine Research Reserve Association (NERRA), a national nonprofit organization, was established in 1987 to promote and advance the NERRS. NERRA is dedicated to the protection, understanding, and science-based management of our nation’s estuaries and coasts. The NERRS relies on the support of NERRA to strengthen and expand its successful programs, and to enable this network to better address growing challenges to our nation’s estuaries and coasts. NERRA works with Congress, NOAA, and public and private partners to increase support for research, monitoring, education, and stewardship within the NERRS. NERRA also provides public education and outreach to improve awareness and understanding of the importance of estuaries and coasts. Mission To inspire the protection of our nation’s estuaries and to promote conservation-based research, education, and stewardship through the National Estuarine Research Reserve System.
