That pretty much sums it up. Your intellectual property is probably going out the door, but you just don't have the technology to know about it. Effort to Make Encryption Ubiquitous July 19, 2010 Link: link A group of mostly Stanford University researchers are proposing an TCP extension called tcpcrypt which will provide near ubiquitous encryption on the Internet. While encrypted web traffic (https), file transfer (scp/sftp), and login (ssh) already exist, tcpcrypt will supposedly make it much simpler for application developers, server administrators, and users. EINSTEIN Is the Wrong Tool June 20, 2010 Link: link EINSTEIN, a network-based intrusion detection tool and a critical component of the government's $35-50 billion Comprehensive National Cybersecurity Initiative (CNCI) is, according to Richard Stiennon, a waste of money. Not only will it require a huge staff to monitor the deluge of alerts it will generate, it will still miss some of the most important attacks such as "those seen by Google, the Dalai Lama's office, and the Pentagon". Stiennon knows the computer security field having been a former VP of Research for Gartner where he covered security topics including firewalls, intrusion detection, intrusion prevention, security consulting and managed security services for the Security and Privacy group [ 1 ]. DHS Not Ready for Major Attacks June 16, 2010 Link: link U.S. Lawmakers seem to conclude that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security is not ready for a serious cybersecurity attack. One major problem: they cannot hire enough competent security experts (roughly half of the positions at US-CERT are unfilled), and they may need to offer higher than normal government-scale salaries. Military Blind To Insider Activities June 6, 2010 Link: link SPC Bradley Manning, a U.S. Army Intelligence analyst with a Top Secret/SCI clearance, was arrested for releasing classified information including the video of U.S. helicopter gunships killing innocent civilians including two Reuters employees. Manning, while rummaging around classified computer systems, apparently found that video in a JAG officer's directory. He also apparently stole 260,000 classified diplomatic cables and other documents. What is amazing is that after the video was broadcast to the public, the military still didn't know who leaked it.
