Description

The mission of New Avenues to Independence is to provide opportunities for people with disabilities and special needs to become more independent and productive members of society by offering the highest quality support services and developing innovative and inclusive programs . New Avenues has developed a continuum of services, meeting the changing needs of individuals with disabilities throughout the course of their lifetime. New Avenues’ programs are currently serving over 550 individuals, ages 3-100 years in Ashtabula, Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake, and Summit counties, Ohio.

New Avenues is dedicated to providing worthwhile and meaningful internship opportunities to high school and college students. Internships can be tailored to fit the student's goals while also meeting the needs of the agency.

Through the Supported Living and Community Based Waiver programs, New Avenues has been providing in-home services for children and adults with developmental disabilities since 1992. An individual’s needs and preferences determine the services required to assist the individual in successfully living in the community. Currently, we serve more than 100 individuals throughout Ashtabula, Cuyahoga, Lake, and Summit counties.

A group of dedicated parents founded New Avenues to Independence as the Parents Volunteer Association in 1952 to provide educational, vocational and recreational experiences for children with disabilities whose only option was to live in institutions. Recognizing the social injustice imposed upon individuals with disabilities forced to live in institutional settings, the founding parents were determined to establish alternatives.

New Avenues’ Mainstream Housing program (HUD funded program) currently assists up to 125 individuals or families with disabilities in Cuyahoga, Lake and Ashtabula counties. In addition to the rental assistance provided through the vouchers, we provide housing search assistance, tenant/landlord mediation and technical assistance to landlords for making accessibility modifications to units.
