Description

Newcomer Concrete Services incorporated in 1980. Its original founders were Marge & Bill Newcomer. They scraped together every last penny, a dab of ambition, and a lot of hard work. Over the course of 20 years they grew the company slowly but surely. Each year brought more employees and more equipment. Focusing primarily on residential and small municipal jobs was the early goal. However, they sensed a greater opportunity to create a more diverse company. In the mid 1980's Bill & Marge started bidding on larger commercial and O.D.O.T. Projects. Sidewalk forms and 1-ton trucks weren't going to cut it anymore. They hired Larry Winckley to jump-start a new phase of their business. This was the beginning of NCS' slip-form curb machine operation. They purchased a Miller Formless 7900 series machine and expanded their working radius to 100 miles. Seeing a growing market in Columbus, it was an obvious choice for expansion. Because of the great distance between Norwalk and Columbus, Bill & Marge took a chance and sent Dave Newcomer there to establish a market share. Dave established a strong foothold on the Greater Columbus area in a few short years. In the meantime Larry left NCS to pursue his own excavating business. By 1990, NCS was doing $2,000,000 a year in revenue and ready to take the next step. It was time to buy the second curb machine. In 10 "short" years NCS had transformed from a small residential concrete contractor to a state-wide road and site-building contractor. The early 90's were exciting: the addition of the crews, the construction of a company office & shop complex, the expansion of revenues. Times were good and ambitions became greater. In 1993 Bill, Marge, & Dave designated Jeff Newcomer to build a stronger company presence in Western Ohio. With the resurgence of Toledo and a booming economy NCS grew rapidly. By 1994 revenues had doubled again to $5,000,000. More curb machines joined the fleet by 1996 and were putting out over 750,000 lineal feet of curb each year. With over 50 personnel NCS was establishing itself as a serious contender in the concrete world. The year 1997 proved to be a landmark year for NCS. We converted our labor force to union shop in live of our split union/nonunion setup. This helped maintain an excellent workforce. NCS continued its steady growth through the rest of the nineties methodically and properly. A fifth curb machine was added along with a paving machine and road trimming machine. NCS was now a major player in the entire Ohio market. As we approached 2000 NCS was building over 1,000,000 lineal feet of curb annually. In March 2000 everything changed. Bill and Marge tired of the daily grind and looked forward to enjoying the fruits of their labors. They sold the company to Jeff & Dave Newcomer and bid adieu to the concrete world. Jeff & Dave looked to grow the company even more. A new focus was to be the "super job" NCS wanted to start competing for and building even the largest site and road contracts. Multi-million dollar contracts were not uncommon and company revenues grew over $15,000,000 in 2000. With an economic downturn in 2001 NCS still managed to maintain its 2000 revenue.
