The Northern Tier Industry and Education Consortium was formed in the fall of 1993 by leading members of local industry and school administrators to improve career awareness and career preparation for young people in our area. A grant was received by NTIEC in May of 1993 to establish a Youth Apprenticeship Program (YAP), and by September, 10 students from 5 local schools were placed in 5 local industries. Over the years, the YAP program has grown and other programs, such as Job Shadowing, Career Fairs, Educator in the Workplace and Business Professional in the Classroom, have been added. To create a highly skilled work force in Northeastern Pennsylvania through integration of school, employment, and training processes. Each year as part of the YAP program, a large group of high school juniors and seniors are matched with work positions in local businesses or industries to gain career awareness and valuable job skills. These "Youth Apprentices" work from 8 to 30 hours per week depending on each student's individual schedule and ability. Students learn valuable job skills and get to view many career possibilities, but grades always come first. If a student gets behind or does not exhibit good employee skills, they can be removed from the program. It is truly a real world, "adult" experience. (Try the Youth Apprentice page for more info.) The NTIEC goal is to support, to some degree, each of the 22 school districts and career centers to complete our mission statement. Several single day programs are offered to the districts by utilizing NTIEC's unique ability to connect the schools with local businesses. Career Fairs with varying themes are offered each year to groups of schools or to an individual district, if the school desires. One-on-one shadowing is offered for a student to get a direct view of a specific career while observing someone working in that field. Since students rely heavily on input from their teachers and guidance counselors, Educator in the Workplace experiences provide eye-opening career availability input to our teachers. Their advice to students is much more informed after these experiences. NTIEC also partners with other local agencies to provide career awareness opportunities, and we are the designated Regional Career Education Partner for our five counties in Pennsylvania.
