We are the proud guardians of the nation’s local access network, sometimes referred to as the ‘last mile’ – the copper wires connecting homes and businesses to telephone exchanges, from where their phone and data calls are transmitted across the country and the world.If all the cable that makes up the local access network was linked end to end, it would stretch an incredible 120 million kilometres – the equivalent of almost 3,000 times around the planet!We employ a small army of nearly 25,000 engineers to install, service and maintain that network. They visit 11,000 homes and offices and scale the height of Mount Everest up our poles every day. That adds up to an incredible 3.6 million site visits and close to 3,300 kilometres climbed a year, not to mention the 200,000 manholes they have to climb down!
