Description

At the cellular level, the fundamental basis of hypothermic protection is the effect of temperature on reaction rates which, according to Arrhenius' theory, are generally slowed by a reduction in temperature (typically 50% reduction for each 10 degree drop in temperature for most reactions). Since the processes of deterioration associated with ischemia and anoxia are mediated by chemical reactions, it has proven well founded to attempt to prevent or attenuate these changes by applying hypothermia.
