Judy and Bill Lantz are licensed clinical laboratory scientists and owners of Parrots Naturally. Together they breed and lovingly raise more than 25 species of parrots. You may have known them as Live Oak Aviary. They raised and sold a small number of parrot babies to a select group of bird friends. As the breeding family grew, so did their involvement with new and exciting diets and bird products. Parrots Naturally has evolved from the desire to share bird experiences and knowledge with other bird lovers. In their previous lives they worked in the field of clinical laboratory medicine and until 1998 owned Warner Medical Laboratory in Woodland Hills, California. They provided testing services to traditional medical doctors, but also developed unique procedures that were used by practitioners of complementary medicine (a discipline that attempts to meld traditional Western medicine with Asian medicine). The lab, which opened in 1985, was the culmination of a dream they shared. They had previously worked for other labs for almost 20 years and enjoyed both the pure science and the opportunity to make a difference in the field. When the lab closed, they regretted not being able to continue with the work they had trained for and loved. “We think that we have found a way to combine our backgrounds in lab medicine and our love of the parrots," says Judy Lantz. "We want to share with others that knowledge and commitment and are currently exploring ways to perform some avian testing and make a contribution to aviculture." In 1988, Judy and Bill made the leap into retail business by opening Parrots Naturally. With their scientific experience they continue to explore alternative methods of assessing avian health and nutrition. Judy continues: It is as though the last 30 years, maybe all of my life and Bill ’s, have been somehow and without our knowledge a preparation for what we are trying to accomplish through Parrots Naturally and our breeding program at Live Oak Aviary. We have often said that Parrots Naturally is not a pet store and not even a bird store, although we have quite a flock! It has become an Avian Resource Center through which we hope to provide the tools and expertise to assist people in the proper care and nurturing of their parrots. Education is the core of our business, as it is the primary mission of the bird clubs.
