The development of a computer based, distance learning, delivery system has been a priority for Crawford Scientific over the past few years, culminating in OPDAC: Online Professional Development in Analytical Chemistry. OPDAC courses have the same basic features and benefits: On completion of the course the participant will have had a thorough grounding in the essential fundamentals of the technology. LC-MS is the fastest growing analytical technique available today. Due to the sudden growth in this technique there is a shortage of trained people available to run the installed systems. There are many interactive parameters in the technique and while results may be obtained with generic settings these are rarely optimized. A better understanding of the chemistry and physico-chemistry will lead to greater accuracy, selectivity, sensitivity, and reproducible methods. LC-MS for the Chromatographer trains and most importantly educates people in the technique. The benefits to the analytical laboratory will include having more personnel available that can plan, implement and analyze experiments with greater competency, troubleshoot instrument and chromatography problems. Additionally, it trains personnel to contribute effectively to method development. Such an increase in the understanding of LC-MS may directly lead to higher numbers of 'right first time' determinations and less instrument downtime.
