Photon Engineering LLC is a consulting and software development firm based in Tucson, AZ specializing in all phases of optical engineering: design, analysis and implementation.

The instructor is Dr. R. John Koshel, Vice-President of Consulting at Photon Engineering and Adjunct Professor at the University of Arizona Optical Sciences Center. Dr. Koshel has over 20 years experience in the broad and growing field of illumination engineering, including experimental, modeling, and theory. He has worked on many illumination projects incorporating solid-state lighting, solar concentrators, lightpipes, luminaires, laser pumping, and optimization and tolerancing.

Our business philosophy is not to “nickel and dime” our customers with add-ons and extra features that drive the purchase price upwards. We believe that it is misleading to attract potential customers with a low initial price and then make them pay extra for the critical features they need to get their job done. However, we also understand that some customers may need certain high power features and that not all customer’s needs are the same, therefore we have created two editions of FRED.

Whether customers are in need of its advanced systems design and analysis software, FRED, continuing education with short courses and tutorials, or require engineering expertise through consulting, Photon Engineering’s vision is to provide effective and affordable solutions without sacrificing quality.

The Illumination Engineering short course is a 3-day instruction on the modeling, design, and concepts involved in the field of illumination. As a practical course on the theory and calculations involved in illumination design, no software programs are used during the class.
