Floyd Pike dreamed of owning his own power line construction company. He had the knowledge and the enthusiasm but lacked the equipment that was necessary. Equipment was a problem. It was 1945, shortly after the Second World War, and trucks were hard to find. He had almost exhausted all possibilities when he heard a story that caught his attention. A line truck had fallen from a barge into the inland waterway close to Beaufort, North Carolina. It had been under water for several months. Floyd quickly checked into the salvage possibilities, and within several days, he and a friend were headed to the Coast. Together, they raised the truck from the bottom, got it running, and drove it back to Mount Airy in freezing November weather... with no windshield.
