In 1912, Max Greenberg left the hardware store in Daytona Beach, Florida, where he had been working for two year, to start his own store in Lake Worth. It was a new town that had just been platted by two Midwest developers, and 25-year-old Max thought it had great potential. Many of the new inhabitants were still living in tents. Electricity was not available until 1914. This was indeed a typical frontier town. The new settlers needed:About 1917, Pioneer Hardware Moved From The Original little store on south Dixie, to a larger store on Lake Avenue, the main street of Lake Worth. By 1920, Max Greenberg realized that with the basic housing construction having been completed, the residents needed a place in Lake Worth to buy their furnishing. He then built another large store alongside the hardware store, breaking through the wall for an entranceway. The new store, with the name changed to Pioneer Hardware and Furniture Company, now stocked:By 1924, the Florida real estate boom was heating up, with much more money coming into the area. The store added fine wood furniture from Grand Rapids, elegant upholstered settees, Ax minister carpet, cedar chests, and the new electric refrigerators. The top quality built a reputation that brought many new customers who drove to Lake Worth from Palm Beach and West Palm Beach to make this the largest retailer in town.
