"Our business has really picked up since the first of the year," said Scott Bernhardt, president of Planalytics, a global business weather intelligence firm founded in 1996, with offices in London and Berwyn, Pa.

Weather presents a number of challenges for manufacturers of both consumer and industrial products. For food, beverage and other consumer packaged goods (CPG) businesses, demand levels and sales can change on a whim as weather patterns shift. Snow storms increase the need for soup and snow blowers; heat waves drive demand higher for products like air conditioners, bottled water and sandals; etc. The same is true for manufacturers of weather impacted non-consumables like power equipment, apparel, automotive and outdoor products.

AWIS was incorporated on April 26, 1996 as the Agricultural Weather Information Service, Inc.. The original focus was on providing agricultural weather services.

Enhanced Retail Solutions was founded in 2002 by a group of retail veterans who saw a fundamental shift occurring between retailers and their vendor partners.

However, even though companies have the latest technology and manpower to provide services, there may be cheaper alternatives, said Tulane's Roy.
