Over the course of the next few months we will be covering The Top 15 Questions to Ask Your Tank Manufacturer . In this first installment of this series we will be covering a question we frequently receive about the ASTM D1998 testing standards and how tank manufactures test their tanks.

Formerly known as the Abell Company, Poly was founded in 1955 as an agricultural distribution service. In 1970, the Abell family recognized a need for better storage solutions for corrosive chemicals. They developed a process for rotomolded, crosslinked plastic storage as an alternative to FRP, stainless steel and lined steel. Today, Poly Processing has manufacturing facilities in Louisiana, California and Virginia.

Most products that come in contact with potable water are tested under NSF-61 with the pH 5, pH 8 and pH 10 exposure waters defined in the standard. These exposure waters were designed to simulate the wide variety of potable water chemistries encountered across North America. However, these exposure waters were not designed to predict leaching of materials caused by aggressive chemicals. To address this concern, NSF created a more extensive standard and certification.

On the surface, polyethylene storage takes can look pretty similar. It’s tough to tell a more expensive, well-designed and constructed tank from a cheap, inferior tank. Many customers are unaware that there is a standard for tank construction based upon resin properties and testing, or they simply assume all tank manufactures follow the ASTM D 1998 standards.

Rather than settle for the industry standard, Poly Processing strives to define it by developing fittings and accessories that clearly address consumer needs. By analyzing industry requirements and working directly with our customers we are able to gather the information and knowledge needed to develop specialized products that address issues in the field.
